I think this might be a candy made with little to no reference. I’ve always said that the candy I enjoy most is candy that is original, this fits that 100%. The best way to describe it is a ball of nougat like substance surrounded by some kind of dried fruit with a cashew wedged in the nougat. It looks like it’s trying to simulate some kind of fruit or nut, but maybe one from someone’s imagination. It could be that in Vietnam this is a common treat, likely from a long time ago, but I’ve never seen anything like this at all.

The hidden part of this treat seems to be coconut. Other than the nut, I would describe the texture of this treat to be very spongy. The nut gives it a nice little crunch, but the odd dried fruit and the nougat like substance is very spongy. Having said this, the flavour is overwhelmingly coconut. The fruit (which I still don’t actually know what fruit it is) seems to be fairly flavourless, and the coconut seems to be coming from the nougat. The cashew while giving it that slight crunch, flavour wise it doesn’t really add much.

The biggest surprise here is the texture, as well as the fact that it’s kind of dry. I think a prune or date would have added more moisture than the fruit that featured, but it would have also changed the balance of texture and flavour. It’s an odd looking candy, but it’s actually pretty good. The coconut is the dominant flavour, but it’s not overwhelming. The nut gives it a nice crunch as well. Most important is this “candy” is like nothing I’ve ever had before, and it’s not bad. That actually happens less often than you would imagine.
