There are so many ways that these could go wrong. The two that come to mind are quality of the chocolate and texture of the sprinkles. Quality of the chocolate is probably the biggest concern as most of this treat is chocolate. Texture of the sprinkles is probably a factor most people wouldn’t think about when making or buying these, but it could very seriously effect the enjoyment of these Speckles. Most might imagine that the only thing that the sprinkles are giving this treat is visual, however if the sprinkles are two hard and don’t melt in your mouth, you’ll end up with gritty chocolate.
Fortunately the people at Haigh’s didn’t have any problems at all. The chocolate is smooth, creamy and has a wonderful milk chocolate flavour. The sprinkles are a little crunchy, and give it a subtle nice texture at first, but after a few seconds they soften up and let the chocolate shine. The sprinkles in this case add just a little texture and some visual appeal, they don’t add anything to the flavour at all.
I’m thinking that flavoured sprinkles might be a fun way to enhance these Speckles a little bit. Why not add a nice cinnamon or even a little spice to the sprinkles to give the milk chocolate a little kick. It would be challenging to balance the chocolate flavour with the additional flavours, but if done right it might be tasty. I feel like the folks at Haigh’s might be able to pull this off as well. They seemed to be very thoughtful about this simple version of Speckles, so they’d probably do a great job kicking up a few notches.
